Biomes
In this WebQuest, students will research biomes. Each class will become experts on a particular biome. The class will then work as a group to develop a presentation teaching others about the assigned biome. After the group project is completed, students will then research one animal of the biome and create an educational product about the animal. Items to be researched include: animal facts, food web, where the animal is found, survival, and threats. Individuals will then decide how to present their information in their visitors guide.


Introduction

You have been hired by Beautiful Biomes to design a field guide to one of the biomes found on the planet Earth. Working with groups you will become naturalists to help guide visitors through a biome, and you will help them learn about the diversity and interdependence of plants and animals. The biomes you will study include the: tropical rainforest, deciduous forest, tundra, grassland, marine, and desert.

Task


First our class will research a biome. You will become experts on a particular part of the biome, and you will be responsible for teaching this information to fellow students. Your areas of expertise include: location, land/soil, plants and animals located in the biome, & climate. After teaching classmates about your part of the biome, we will, as a class decide on how we will present this information to other students.

After the group portion of the project is complete, you will complete an individual project. You will become an expert on one animal that lives in your biome. You will learn about the characterisitics of your animal, animal facts, where your animal lives, how it survives in the biome, threats to its survival, and any other ideas of your choosing. After researching your animal, you will create a model of your animal and design a product that teaches visitors to your biome about the animal.

Finally it is time for a tour. With all that you have learned, you will take visitors on a tour of your biome. You will teach visitors about the biome and the animals living there.

Process


Research You, and the members of your class will become experts on a biome. In order to become an expert, you must conduct research. You will use a graphic organizer to help you take notes and organize your information. After you have taken your notes, you will learn to organize them, and you will create a final product.

Conclusion

At the end of the project students will have the opportunity to reflect upon their learning. We will hold a class discussion about how living things are interconnected. Students will also have the opportunity to write about their learning. Students will share what they learned, what they liked about the project and what they disliked.
